Quick Answer: There is no age limit for CA Foundation, Intermediate, or Final at any stage. CA Foundation requires a Class 12 pass in any stream. CA Intermediate can be entered either after clearing Foundation, or directly with 55% (commerce) / 60% (non-commerce) graduation marks. CA Final requires clearing both groups of Intermediate, completing 3 years of articleship, AICITSS, and the Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM).

Thinking about becoming a Chartered Accountant but confused about who can actually apply? You're not alone. Every year, thousands of students in Jaipur and across India ask the same question before filling their ICAI registration form: "Am I eligible for CA?"

The good news is that the CA course is open to students from every stream- Commerce, Science, or Arts- and there's no upper age limit at any level. But the educational qualifications, percentage requirements, and registration routes differ significantly depending on whether you're entering through CA Foundation or the Direct Entry route. Getting this wrong can cost you months of delay.

In this guide, we'll break down the complete CA Eligibility Criteria 2026 for Foundation, Intermediate, and Final levels- including age limits, qualification requirements, direct entry percentages, articleship rules, and the exact exam-session table you need to plan around.

CA Course Structure: Three Levels You Must Clear

Before jumping into eligibility, it helps to understand the CA course structure. ICAI's Chartered Accountancy programme is divided into three stages:

  1. CA Foundation – Entry-level exam for students after Class 12
  2. CA Intermediate – Second level, accessible via Foundation or Direct Entry
  3. CA Final – Last level, taken after completing Intermediate and articleship training

Each level has its own eligibility rules, and you must clear one level (with the required percentage) before registering for the next.

CA Foundation Eligibility Criteria 2026

CA Foundation is the starting point for most students who begin their CA journey right after school.

Educational Qualification:

  • You must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board, in any stream- Commerce, Science, or Arts.
  • Students who have appeared for Class 12 and are awaiting results can also register provisionally. However, you can only sit for the Foundation exam after your Class 12 results are officially declared.
  • Students who have cleared Class 10 can take provisional registration with the ICAI Board of Studies, but a minimum four-month study period after registration is compulsory before appearing in the exam.

Age Limit: There is no age limit for CA Foundation. Whether you're 17 or 45, you can register as long as you meet the educational qualification.

Registration Requirement:

  • Provisional or regular registration with the ICAI Board of Studies is mandatory before the exam.
  • A minimum study period (typically four months) must be completed from the date of registration to the first day of the exam month.

Who Can Skip CA Foundation?
Certain categories of students are exempted from CA Foundation and can directly register for CA Intermediate. We've covered this in detail below under Direct Entry.

CA Intermediate Eligibility Criteria 2026

CA Intermediate can be entered through two distinct routes- and knowing which one applies to you can save you a lot of time.

Route 1: Through CA Foundation

If you've cleared CA Foundation, you're automatically eligible to register for CA Intermediate. No additional percentage requirement applies here- passing Foundation is enough.

Route 2: Direct Entry Scheme

This route is designed for graduates, postgraduates, and students from related professional courses who want to skip CA Foundation entirely.

You're eligible for Direct Entry into CA Intermediate if you fall into any of these categories:

  • Commerce graduates/postgraduates with a minimum aggregate of 55%, having studied core subjects like accounting, auditing, mercantile law, corporate law, economics, taxation, costing, or business administration.
  • Non-commerce graduates/postgraduates with a minimum aggregate of 60%.
  • Students appearing in their final year of graduation can register provisionally, provided they submit proof of passing within six months of their final exam.
  • Candidates who have cleared the CMA Intermediate or CS Executive level are also eligible for Direct Entry, regardless of their graduation stream.

Age Limit: Just like Foundation, ICAI has not prescribed any age limit for CA Intermediate registration.

Additional Requirement: Before appearing in the CA Intermediate exam, candidates (through either route) must complete the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS).

CA Final Eligibility Criteria 2026

CA Final is the last and most demanding stage, and its eligibility depends heavily on how well you've cleared Intermediate and completed your articleship.

Core Requirements:

  1. Clear both groups of CA Intermediate with a minimum of 40% marks in each individual paper and 50% aggregate in each group (or both groups together, depending on how you appear).
  2. Complete Practical Training (Articleship): You need to complete the prescribed 3-year articleship period, including any excess leave, or be within the last six months of your training at the time of filling the exam form.
  3. Complete Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM): ICAI requires candidates to clear Self-Paced Module Tests (Sets A, B, C, and/or D depending on your registration batch) with a minimum of 50% marks, after Intermediate but before Final.
  4. Complete AICITSS: The Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills must be completed before appearing in the Final exam.

Age Limit: There is no separate age limit for CA Final. Since it's the last stage, your eligibility is purely a function of having cleared Intermediate and your training status- not your age.

Important Note for Direct Entry Students: If you entered through the Direct Entry route, your Final-level eligibility conditions remain the same as Foundation-route students once you clear Intermediate and complete articleship.

CA Exam Sessions & Registration Deadlines 2026 (Monthly Overview)

ICAI now conducts CA exams multiple times a year across all three levels. Use this table to plan your registration timeline- always double-check exact dates on the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) closer to each session, since dates can shift slightly.

CA Level Exam Sessions (Per Year) Typical Registration Window Minimum Study/Training Period Before Exam
CA Foundation January, May, September 3–4 months before exam month Minimum 4 months from registration
CA Intermediate January, May, September (twice guaranteed, third session added in some years) 4–5 months before exam month Minimum 8 months from registration (Foundation route)
CA Final May, September, November (three sessions as per revised ICAI scheme) Registration closes roughly 2 months before exam Completion of articleship + AICITSS + SPOM

Tip: Always register on the SSP as early as your eligibility allows- late registration is one of the most common (and avoidable) reasons students miss an exam attempt.

Documents You'll Need for Registration

Regardless of which level or route you're registering for, keep these documents ready:

  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets (for Foundation route)
  • Graduation/postgraduation mark sheet and degree certificate (for Direct Entry)
  • CMA Intermediate or CS Executive pass certificate (if applicable)
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/Differently Abled, if claiming reservation)
  • Passport-size photograph and signature scan
  • Valid ID proof and address proof

Uploading incomplete or unclear documents is one of the most common reasons SSP applications get rejected or delayed- double-check scans before submitting.

Common Mistakes Students Make While Checking Eligibility

  1. Assuming there's an age limit – There isn't, at any level. Don't let this myth stop you from starting late.
  2. Registering for Foundation despite qualifying for Direct Entry – If you're a graduate with the required percentage, going through Foundation unnecessarily costs you 8+ months.
  3. Missing the minimum study period – Registering too close to the exam date without meeting the minimum study period will make you ineligible for that attempt.
  4. Ignoring SPOM and AICITSS requirements before Final – Many students focus only on articleship completion and forget these mandatory modules, delaying their Final registration.
  5. Not checking percentage cut-offs for Direct Entry carefully – 55% for commerce graduates and 60% for non-commerce graduates is a hard cut-off, not a guideline.

CA Eligibility vs CMA Eligibility: Quick Comparison

If you're also weighing CMA as an option, our detailed CMA Course Eligibility 2026 guide covers the ICMAI-side requirements. In short: both courses accept Class 12 pass students with no age limit, but CMA's Direct Entry percentage cut-offs and exemption categories differ slightly from CA's. If you're deciding between the two, our CMA Foundation vs CA Foundation comparison can help you choose the right path.
